ELR Software produces computer programs designed by speech pathologists for speech, language & literacy intervention. Our programs may be used interactively within therapy sessions, to increase efficiency in service delivery, and to improve access to the Internet for people with special needs. We are also available as consultants to clinicians and research projects in the fields of literacy and accessibility issues associated with the Internet.

The aim of this newsletter is to inform you of developments and changes to our major products eLr (Extra Language Resources) and Word Meanings. We welcome the opportunity for feedback and questions, and will be pleased to consider including reader contributions and announcements.

This Newsletter (and previous editions) as well as a "print-ready" PDF version of the current edition is available online at www.elr.com.au/news. An email version is also sent monthly to members of our mailing list (See Subscribing/Unsubscribing).

  1. "Universal eLr App" - Ready for You to Try!

  2. eLr, our extensive set of interactive speech and language resources, has been available from our website for more than 20 years. There are 2 modes of access. The "Pro" mode for registered subscribers enables selection and management of intervention activities. The "Guest" mode is free and is for clients of registered users who have been provided a specific set of activities for home or school practice. In the "early days" we realised that for many clinical situations and families, internet coverage was poor or unavailable, so we provided "offline" versions for Windows (since 2001) and iPad (since 2013) for both "Pro" and "Guest" users.

Although internet connections are now much better for most people, there are many clinicians who need reliable access without an internet connection, and families whose children may want to do eLr practice "in the back seat of a car". So, we've now almost completed a universal eLr App which can be installed directly from our website. This means that there'll be an "offline" option for both "Pro" and "Guest" users which will work on all the various, current devices, and which will eventually replace those original Windows and iPad "offline" versions.

Our initial effort has been focussed mainly on the "Guest Access" version (called eLr-Guest App), and it's now ready for public use. The "Pro" version is not yet quite ready for this step, but should be available over the next few weeks. eLr-Guest has been tested on Windows (mainly Windows 10), MacOS, iPad/iPhone, Android tablet and Chromebook devices.

To get a feel for how the current Guest App works, go to eLr at www.elr.com.au/elr.htm and choose "Guest Access". Enter your User ID, tick the "Yes" box to try the new "web app" layout and Logon. The page that opens has both a web-based version of the App for you to explore, and a link to the new installable eLr-Guest App. (If you are not a current subscriber you can get a temporary ID Code to do this from www.elr.com.au/elrtrial.htm).

We are now offering a bonus 6-months eLr access to people who would be prepared to provide specific feedback on usability and reliability from "real world" situations. For eLr subscribers we'll extend your current subscription by 6-months; non-subscribers will get a 6-month temporary subscription. If you are interested in being involved, please contact us for more specific details and options for Zoom support. Any other feedback about the App relating to its installation and operation will also be much appreciated.

  3. Other Independent Developers

  4. As an occasional feature of this Newsletter, we include simple, unpaid announcements of products developed by other small, independent developers, who, like ourselves, are practising clinicians who have put their ideas and experience into resource materials for general distribution. Links and brief information about these sites may be found at www.elr.com.au/links/developers.htm. To date we have listed -

If you would like your materials listed on this page (at no charge), please contact us.

  5. Free Downloads

  6. ELR has a number of free or evaluation files available for downloading directly from our website. Please see www.elr.com.au/downloads.htm for specific details. For other supporting materials and documents available for free download, please see www.elr.com.au/support.htm.

  7. ELR 2020/2021 Calendar

  8. ELR Software offers free eLr tutorials over the web. We can provide this sort of support to individuals, or to groups who would like to have an overview of eLr. We are also offering free Coviu sessions to allow clinicians to get a feel for teletherapy, and in particular the advantages of using eLr for Coviu. Please contact us for details.
